There are moments where we think we know everything there is to know about ourselves.
Moments were we could trail the path of our palm and find a sure way to head back home. But there are also other times when a place inspires us with another way of thinking. Where a secret garden unlocks a secret pathway we never thought could have shone as light as day.
Mental landscapes. They’re a thing you know I tell my friend as she peruses through the home section of the department store.
I’m sure there is she says absentmindedly looking for cushions to replace the white fluffy cat like ones she bought just a few weeks ago. She has a two year old by the way. Didn’t’ anyone tell her that white colour palette furnishings in the living room was a no go area especially with a little tot around? I guess I was too busy putting pen to paper to offer sound advice. Well back to what I was telling you about.
Mental landscapes. Though I have no souvenirs or material gifts to show for it my mind tells another story. It creates a story based on novels I’ve consumed tirelessly, relentlessly. Eager to unfold another narrative I have yet to gasp at. It’s all in the beauty of the mind.
Just like one admires the mountainous hills in the Icelandic landscape or gasps at the lights and sounds of the New York city scape I assure you that I too can admire the wondrous spaces and distant lands my own mind conjures up. Mental landscapes. A mind that can narrate a story of my recent trip to secret lands near and far.
These are the moments where I sit back and reminisce. Reminisce on moments that were never mine to have. Yet moments my mind conjures up and imagines itself to have experienced up close and centre. I often take pleasure in evening walks but it’s the moments where I leisurely roam through the secret gardens of my own mind and listen to its restless rhythms of vibrating thought that reminds me that I have many more unseen spaces hidden in the corners of my mind. Hidden spaces that will eventually unravel themselves by the seams day after day the moment I set my heart to explore the meaning of self.
